President Trump approves Colorado’s request for major disaster declaration to battle coronavirus

President Donald Trump approved Colorado’s request for a major disaster declaration Saturday in response to the coronavirus outbreak.

Governor Jared Polis submitted an urgent request for the declaration Wednesday, a day before issuing s statewide stay-at-home order. 

The move allows the state to receive more federal funding as the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 continues to rise in Colorado.

“Colorado is now eligible to receive additional federal resources to help address the global epidemic impacting our state, the nation, and the world. This declaration ensures that Colorado can be on a level playing field with other states that already have this status like New York and Washington when it comes to federal disaster funding and Federal Emergency Management Agency assistance,” said Polis in a news release.

According to Colorado Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment data released Saturday, at least 13,276 coronavirus tests have been conducted in the state, with 2,061 testing positive, and 44 confirmed deaths, including three Larimer County residents.
